StudentsEducators know that in order for meaningful learning to take place, students must feel a sense of safety and acceptance at school. This is especially true for students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning or queer (LGBTQ). Studies show that creating a supportive environment for LGBTQ students improves educational outcomes for all students, not just those who may identify as LGBTQ. Teaching LGBTQ Students investigates the dimensions associated with creating and sustaining, safe, engaging, inclusive and accepting learning environments that honour the diversity of gender and sexual identities. Candidates will explore processes, practices and policies through the lenses of cisnormativity and heteronormativity to assess how these impact socially just, equitable and inclusive contexts. Candidates will develop strategies for fostering partnerships with parents/guardians that honour and value shared-decision-making, leadership and advocacy for gender and sexual diversity. Candidates will utilize their understanding to inform program planning, development and implementation.
