A major focus of this course is to broaden understanding of what it means to be mathematically literate and understand how to develop this type of literacy in elementary students. To support student learning in mathematics, teachers need subject matter knowledge and pedagogical knowledge. The type of subject matter knowledge teachers need goes well beyond a general ability to do math. It is a specific set of mathematical knowledge and skills that is unique to mathematic instruction. This course is designed to support teachers in acquiring mathematical instruction pedagogy. This course will also deepen and extend teachers' understanding of various resources by discussing and exploring ideas through collaborative inquiry and experiential learning.
