The middle grades mark a vital stage in students' literacy development when they need to develop the complex literacy and critical thinking skills they will carry into high school and beyond. Teachers of Grades 4'8 want all students to grow their skills in ways that ensure success and inspire confidence and competence. This course will engage learners in exploring evidence-based literacy instruction that supports students in making gains with reading and writing development. Topics will include vocabulary instruction, morphology and multisyllabic word reading, comprehension-building practices, academic conversations about text, motivation and engagement in literacy learning, and targeted and intensive interventions for students who need additional support.
