English as a Second Dialect (ESD)* is a term referred to by students who speak a variety of English significantly different from what is used in school. Because the knowledge of the standard dialect is fundamental for nonstandard dialect-speaking students (including the Indigenous students), this course will provide the candidates with the opportunity to explore the many aspects of teaching ESD through a culturally responsive pedagogy. Teaching English as a Second Dialect course is designed to provide candidates with an engaging opportunity to investigate the research, apply the principles, design approaches, and plan instructional strategies related to second-dialect teaching to meet the students needs at the four boards language skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The course will help you develop and execute programs and evaluate teaching strategies and assessment resources related to ESDs services. You will end this course with more vital awareness of cultural considerations in the classroom by referencing the intercultural competencies in the BC Ministry of Education support documents relevant to English as a Second Dialects.
