For candidates planning to teach social science at the Intermediate and Senior levels. Integrated with the current Ontario Curriculum - Grades 9 to 12: Social Sciences and Humanities (represented in this curriculum by courses in equity studies, family studies, general social sciences, philosophy, and world religions) and Ministry of Education practices for assessment, evaluation, and reporting. As a course focusing on teaching methods associated with the successful implementation of the provincial social science curriculum, Candidates will: evaluate teaching materials and assess curriculum models; examine theories of curriculum development, and; design lesson plans and teaching units based on those theories. Given that there are five subject areas that define the current social sciences and humanities curriculum, this course uses the "general social sciences" elements of the curriculum (defined as anthropology, sociology, and psychology) as its primary focus. Opportunities to engage companion components of this curriculum - such as equity studies, family studies, philosophy, and world religions - occurs through the active connection the course makes with community resources and resource people, instructional design activities, and the review of classroom resources.
