What is the Prison Industrial Complex? In this course, you will be introduced to the prison industrial complex (PIC), what it is, what it consists of and what are some theories that are useful in understanding how the system works. Students will learn the ways in which criminalization works differs in the United States compared to Canada. Students will consider how intersectionality and Marxism are useful in analyzing how marginalized groups have been criminalized and are disproportionately represented in prisons and jails. Students will take this knowledge to examine current events regarding the PIC and make connections to how institutions work alongside the prisons.
