Indigenous children are overrepresented in the foster care system in Ontario and throughout Canada as a result of historic and ongoing unjust political, social and economic policies. The Child, Youth and Family Services Act and the new An Act respecting First Nation, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families are remedial legislation attempting to redress these discriminatory policies. This course examines both the historic and current state of Indigenous child welfare in Ontario and will provide students with a toolkit for further exploring the practice of child protection.
