Courageous Communication refers to the ability to speak openly and honestly about who you are and what your experiences have been, while allowing space for others to do the same, even when emotions run high. Learning from and listening to people who have a drastically different point of view is a crucial, yet rare, skill in today's business world. We are living through a crisis of connection. This crisis of connection exists because it has become incredibly easy to surround ourselves with people who are more like us. Our use of media, social and otherwise, makes it easy for us to seek and hear from those who are more like us. Sometimes we even think those with different viewpoints are wrong or inferior. What's the impact on business? The division follows us to the workplace and can lead to hurt relationships on teams, a limited understanding of customers and their needs. Business leaders who can bring people together, despite their differences, are desperately needed as part of a solution. Learning to listen with curiosity, to really understand another person's point of view, without necessarily having to agree with that point of view, will strengthen your leadership skills and thereby improve business and society. In addition to learning how to have courageous conversations, it is important to have the courage and the words to speak up when injustices are committed in the workplace and to do so in a way that creates a safe space for all to contribute to the best of their abilities. This course will provide students with the tools and the practice to do both.
