This is a Ph.D. seminar that will cover contemporary organization theory and nonmarket strategy. Organization theory consists of a set of approaches to understand how organizations form, grow, interact, recruit and process members, gain and manage resources, and deal with internal and external problems. We will study contemporary organization theory by focusing on some major contemporary schools or perspectives within the field. In addition, this class will cover nonmarket strategy. Nonmarket strategies are the strategies by which firms influence their institutional environment for competitive advantage. We will draw on foundations from institutional theory and institutional economics to study how firms engage with political, legal, and social environment. (Crossed with MGMT 905).
