This course is for copyeditors with at least three years of experience who want to transition from nonfiction to fiction and copyeditors who have completed training and want to focus on fiction. This eight-module class designed for students with copyediting experience is an intensive study of the fiction editing process and the copyeditor's role in preparing an indie author's manuscript for submission. It provides students with an introduction to the three top-selling genres: YA, mystery, and romance. Through required readings and hands-on practice, students will learn how to approach manuscripts of these genres, what they require in terms of style and pace, and how they can be vastly improved. The class also covers the different styles of editing, constructive comments and queries, the importance of creating the style sheet, and the tone of, and information included in, an editorial letter. The final assignment is the review and editing of a full manuscript and letter to the author. Heavy reading is required. Two Q&A sessions via Zoom are held during the eight-week period.
