A critical examination of urban and regional development efforts in selected developing countries through case studies. The course will have a comparative perspective and it will attempt to identify transferable experience from various developing to developed countries, particularly bearing on problems of economically poor and ethnically distinct regions. The emphasis will be on exploring assumptions, contents and implementation of various planning strategies with the objective of finding out the conditions necessary for successful planning. Special attention will be given to the planning approaches employed in dealing with problems of urban growth, infrastructure developments, housing, land markets, and regional inequalities.
