The economic, social and political challenges facing Egypt and the Maghreb countries of North Africa, including the “Arab Spring”. These countries may be discussed: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Tunisia, Western Sahara. Prerequisite(s): AFRI 1001 or AFRI 1002 or FYSM 1901 or permission of the Institute of African Studies. Lecture three hours a week, or two-hour lecture and one- hour discussion group per week.
