The economic, social and political challenges facing countries of West Africa, including domestic issues and regional relations. These countries may be discussed: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo. Prerequisite(s): AFRI 1001 or AFRI 1002 or FYSM 1901 or permission of the Institute of African Studies. Lecture three hours a week, or two-hour lecture and one- hour discussion group per week.
