This course explores the history of antibiotic discovery and the influence of these drugs on modern medicine. We will explore (a) the array of antibiotic classes that are currently employed in the clinic; (b) the methods through which our current antibiotics were discovered; (c) next-generation methods to identify novel antibiotics; and (d) mechanisms to overcome the economic disincentives that limit antibiotic discovery and development by for-profit entities.
