Students are introduced to the advance knowledge and understanding of power electronics applications in power transmission systems with a focus on flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS). Students learn the role of power semiconductor devices and technologies related to voltage-sourced and current-sourced converters. Students explore specific FACTS controllers including SVC, STATCOM, TCSC, SSSC, UPFC, IPFC as well as voltage regulators, phase shifters, and special controllers with a comparison of their performance attributes. Prerequisites: Admission to the Graduate program in Engineering.
