This course presents concepts related to mental health care to senior-level (3rd and 4th year) students in health-related fields. Students explore the evolution of mental health care in Canada and build an awareness of current issues and concerns that impact mental health care in today's healthcare environment. Students engage in experiential and reflexive learning informed by current evidence-based literature and clinical experts in the field. The course embraces a trauma informed perspective and students are guided through assessment, communication, teaching, and therapeutic techniques that they can apply in their own lives as well as in their clinical practice. Students are guided through these experiences in order to build their resilience as healthcare professionals, and their confidence in understanding and improving mental health care for their patients/clients, their profession and their communities. Prerequisite: Completion of 2nd year of a health-related program.
