This course is an introduction to the profession of nursing. Students are introduced to the curriculum's foundational perspectives and concepts and how these relate to nursing practice. Students explore nursing history, the evolution of nursing, and the health care system. Students will explore individual and professional values and beliefs with the purpose of developing their professional nursing self-concept. Students critically reflect upon role of gender, race, and class in social construction of nursing as a profession and explore their responsibility for safe and ethical nursing practice while discovering the governing bodies that regulate nursing. Prerequisite: Acceptance into Year 1 of the BSN program; NURS 1730, NURS 1740 and NURS 1170 (must be taken before or at the same time as NURS 1700).
