This course will examine historical and contemporary portrayals of Indigenous peoples in film and media in both North America and global contexts. Students will focus on early narrative choices of Hollywood filmmakers and gain understandings of how this contributed to stereotypical views of Indigenous peoples. Students will explore breakthrough roles of Indigenous actors and learn how Indigenous filmmakers share their stories, shifting mainstream understandings of the diversity of languages, cultures, communities, humour and major movements of Indigenous peoples throughout the history of Indigenous cinema. This course will focus on films and media arts that will be placed in dialogue with selected foundational decolonization initiatives, language revitalization movements, and decolonial approaches.
