Students in this class explore the history and impact of photography on communication via mass media from newspapers and photojournalism, through commercial contexts such as advertising and promotion, to online uses including social media. Students learn how to create images for a variety of contexts (e.g. commercial, news, portraiture) that require different styles and approaches to image-making and styling. Students also learn the differences in practice between photojournalists and commercial or studio photographers, and develop their skills with software to modify photographs (and when this is appropriate).
