This course is intended primarily for students in Agricultural and Food Sciences and four-year Biological Sciences programs who would benefit from hands-on experience of the most commonly used techniques in the modern biochemistry laboratory. The course will provide practical training in the use of micropipettors and spectrophotometers for the quantitation and analysis of proteins and enzymes, carbohydrates and DNA. Students will learn the application of various chromatographic and centrifugation-based techniques for biomolecule purification and analysis with an emphasis on topics of specific relevance to agriculture and food sciences. May not be used as part of an Honours, Major, or Minor program in Chemistry or in Microbiology [3 credits]
