The course will examine microbial communities, which will be discussed in terms of their composition, physiological adaptations and their effects on their abiotic and biological surroundings. Topics will include nutrient cycling, biodegradation and adaptation to extreme environments, and the applications arising from these microbial functions. Methods for quantitation of microbial biomass and biological activity will be discussed [3 credits]
