Using a critical lens this course will provide students with an overview of the child welfare system in Canada, with a specific focus on Manitoba. The course provides an introduction to theory and skills necessary for emergent assessment and intervention approaches when working with families and communities. Current changes to child welfare legislation intended to address the over-representation of Indigenous children and families in the child welfare system will be discussed. The implications of these changes to the child and family services system in Manitoba will be examined throughout the course. Open to non-Social Work students with a minimum of 54 credit hours and with instructor permission [3 credits]
