The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the field of second language acquisition (SLA) with a focus on the implications of SLA findings for L2 teaching. Topics to be covered include the role of internal (e.g. cognitive processes) and external (e.g. linguistic environment) variables in SLA, the development of learner language, cross-linguistic influences, individual characteristics and social factors influencing SLA. We will explore various aspects of SLA, but the emphasis is placed on examining the social dimensions that influence L2 learning (e.g., social identity, power asymmetries, socio-political and socio-cultural context). Prerequisite(s): Registration in a graduate program is required.
