Focusing on the lived experience of women and men during one of the most dynamic periods in pre-modern Western history, including the transition from feudalism to royal government; the Crusades and interaction among Christian, Muslim and Jewish populations in Europe and the Middle East; monasticism; the conflict between Church and State; popular and high culture and the development of the Romanesque and Gothic visual arts, architecture, and material culture; the growth of cities; mysticism, new religious movements, and popular religion; the crisis of the fourteenth century brought on by famine and plague; popular revolts and the Hundred Years’ War.
