This course will explore the rise, evolution and demise of the Soviet Union. Topics such as the revolutionary upheaval of 1917, socialist renewal under NEP, Stalinism, the Soviet Unionâs participation in WWII, the Cold War, Khrushchev's Thaw, âStagnationâ and detente, Gorbachevâs reforms, and Soviet collapse will be examined through a variety of sources and methodologies. As a broad survey, the course will not dwell on particular eras or personalities, but rather place these within context. The course will conclude with an assessment of the Soviet legacy.
