The kinetic theory of gases is developed to illustrate the molecular description of classical quantities such as temperature, pressure and work. Transport properties such as viscosity, thermal conductivity and mass diffusivity are investigated using kinetic theory. Statistical approaches based on classical and quantum mechanics are used to describe the microscopic behaviour of substances. The microscopic interpretation of entropy is discussed.
