Sanskrit, as one of the world’s ancient languages, belongs to the Aryan or Indo-Iranian language family. It has been the sacred language of a few Indian religions namely Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism and many literatures of these religions flourished in Sanskrit. It has also been considered as one of the mother/source languages of many South Asian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, and Sinhalese etc. This course is designed to provide basic familiarity with Sanskrit to students with no prior knowledge of this influential language. Throughout this course, the students will learn to write Devanagari scripts, pronounce and memorize Sanskrit words, and learn basic grammar so that they would be able to construct basic sentences in Sanskrit. Weekly hours: 3 Lecture hoursNote: Students with credit for SNSK 101.6 may not take SNSK 114 for credit.
