A broad survey of Indigenous arts in North America focusing on the east and the north, from ancient Mississippian cities, to historic Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee cultural traditions, to Inuit modern and contemporary art. Topics from resource extraction and water politics to ancestral arts and modern markets will emerge throughout, all departing from analysis of art objects in their cultural context. Assignments draw on the rich variety of Indigenous arts in local Toronto institutions and public spaces.
