Topics include: Russia’s fin-de-siècle art and thought in European context; the aesthetic and philosophical evolution of Russian modernism as a cultural community; modernist experiments in literature; conservative reactions to modernism before and after the communist takeover in Russia; the modernist strategies of survival. Taught and read in English. Russian originals will be read in conjunction with their rewritings in new contexts including in Ireland, India, South Africa, Japan, Turkey, Canada, Argentina.
